“Have A “Great Day”” Tradition at St. Edward School Masses

At the end of every school mass, “Have a “GREAT” Day!”, is shouted by Bob followed with “You too!” from the students.

Bob and Laura became parishioners at St. Edward Church (visit St. Edward Church  here) in August of 1969.  Laura passed away June of 2008.

Bob started saying “Have a “GREAT” Day!” at a Saturday morning Mass with Father Scott Wimsett, 1995. He then said it at the end of every Saturday morning Mass.

Eventually, Bob started to say it at the end of school Masses. After two or three Masses the kids started to respond “You too”. Bob is at every school Mass with the kids.  Bob says he started “Have a “GREAT” Day” to make people happy and to put joy in the world.

“Have A “GREAT” Day! History

The following is a history of “Have A “GREAT” Day!”,

  • Father Frank Eimer was Pastor when Father Scott Wimsett came to St. Edward in June 1995 as Associate Pastor. When Bob first met him, Bob called him “Great Scott”. That is where “Great” got started. At the end of Saturday morning mass Bob started saying, “Have a “GREAT” Day!”.   After Laura and Bob retired, they started going to daily mass and Bob started saying “Have a “GREAT” Day!” at the end of every mass. Father Kenny Kamber had the mass on one Wednesday morning and after Bob said, “Have a “GREAT” Day!”, Father Kenny said, “I didn’t know that was a part of the mass.”, and someone said “It is here at St. Edward!”!

  • Bob was given this DailyWord devotional “Great Day” in January 2002.

Bob spreads joy and happiness while driving, too!

  • Bob purchased a 2000 Toyota Avalon in March, 2003 where he attached the “Have a “GREAT” Day” license plate.  The original license plate was hand-made by Charlie Rueff, a Master Sign Painter.  (Charlie is Bob’s brother-in-law and who is now deceased).  The original plate was made of plastic and was broken in a minor traffic accident.  The present plate, pictured below, was made by Charlie’s son, Bob Rueff.

Bob Shares the joy of “Have A “GREAT” Day” by calling attention to the front of his car by saying (to a stranger) “There’s a special message just for you on the front of my car“.  After they look the response is always a “thumbs up”, with a big smile on their face.
  • St. Edward produced a web page featuring “Have A “GREAT” DAY!” in October, 2006.
  • Below is a picture of the back of Laura and Bob’s grave site at St. Edward’s Cemetery where the headstone was installed October, 2009.  It is visible from Billtown Road in Jeffersontown.
  • In January of 2010, Bob purchased a 2009 Avalon and trasferred the “Have A “GREAT” Day!” plate to the front of it.

  • In April of 2012 Bob installed his official Kentucky license plate.  Bob is saying “Have A “Great Day”” both going and coming!

Now Bob gives away “Have A “GREAT” Day!” pens.

  • June of 2012 the first “Have a “GREAT” Day” ink pens were given to the teachers at St. Edwards, first, and then to everyone who works in the school and in the St. Edward Parish Office.  Then, Bob started giving them to people he meets everywhere!  He says, “I have something for you!” and hands them a pen.  Some respond with “Oh, thank you – you’ve made my day!’, or. “How did you know purple was my favorite color?”, or “Is your name Bob” and others respond with “I will put this in a special place”.
  • In June, 2013, Bob started a tradition of giving a pen to each graduating eighth grader.   Each one receives a pen on graduation night to take home. They will now, “Have a “GREAT” Day !” everyday.
  • As of November, 2014, Bob has given away over 3,000 pens!

  • The first church bulletin for St. Edwards with the “Have a “GREAT” Day” advertisement on the back page was published August, 2012.  Click the bulletin image to see a larger readable version.

  • Below is a picture of Bob’s grandson, Jacob’s, car where the plate was first put on in October of 2013.
  • This web page was created November, 2013.
  • On November 16, 2014, Bob appeared on WDRB-TV News to tell his story. The reporter, Ryan Cummings, titled it, “Four Simple Words.” The story is below, click the arrow on the player to hear and see his story.
